How the numbers work
Overall completion blends two signals per chapter: how far the word count has reached its target, and where the chapter sits editorially (drafting counts for less than revising, which counts for less than done). Each chapter is weighted by its target length, so finishing a 9,000-word results chapter moves the bar more than finishing a 4,000-word conclusion. The words-per-day figure divides the words you still owe by the days left until your defense — if it climbs above 1,500, treat that as a signal to renegotiate scope or the date, not to pull all-nighters.
